Meet the Winemakers
Meet Jeremy Oliver
Jeremy Oliver is one of Australia’s foremost wine writers and presenters and this country’s with over 32 years’ experience in the industry. He is a widely read and fully independent wine commentator whose words are published in several countries and languages. In late 2005 he was named the inaugural Wine Writer of the Year by the widely circulated Australian Wine Selector magazine.
He has hosted most of the leading wine events in Australia including the Maurice O’Shea Awards. Today Jeremy Oliver works internationally in an ambassadorial capacity for Australian wine, having forged close relationships with Austrade, Wine Australia, the Victorian Government and Lizard Island.
Jeremy believes that his technical background, the regular opportunities he enjoys to fine-tune his palate with the best in the business, his work ethic (he tastes thousands of wines each year) and his constantly renewed enthusiasm for wine will create many future opportunities to contribute to the understanding and enjoyment of wine throughout the world.
Jeremy’s contribution to the resort has enhanced the Lizard Island wine and dine experience.

Wine Series One with Mount Mary - September 14th - 17th
Mount Mary is one of Australia’s iconic family owned, single vineyard estates located in the heart of the Yarra Valley. Established in 1971 by John and Marli Middleton, Mount Mary was one of the first vineyards planted in the resurgence of the Yarra Valley as a premium wine-producing region.
Mount Mary is take you on a journey through their extensive range that comprises of two Bordeaux blends (Quintet and Triolet) and two Burgundy varietals (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) produced in their four estate. The company has also recently released an exciting new label ‘Marli Russell by Mount Mary’. Marli Middleton (nee Russell), co- founder of Mount Mary, was the inspiration behind the label in recognition of her enthusiasm for the family to continue the pursuit of new ideas. These new plantings at Mount Mary include 9 varieties traditionally grown in the Rhône Valley of France. The new release wines include a white blend (Marsanne Roussanne) and a red blend (Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre).
Wine Series Two with Torbreck - November 24th - 27th
Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. The roots go back to 1992 when David, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines. In 2008 Torbreck Vintners was acquired by Pete Kight. Pete has wine interests in both the U.S. and Australia and is committed to ensuring the ongoing excellence of Torbreck wines.
The Torbreck endeavour is based around the classic Barossa Valley varietals of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, and a love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Torbreck doesn't only make red wines though, we have Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne planted on our winery block which we have blended to make a white wine. Torbreck Vintners was created with the aim of building one of the finest wine estates in the world. The vision is to pay homage to the vineyards of the Barossa Valley, home to some of the oldest vines on the planet.
Wine Series with Best’s Great Western – January 19th - 22nd
With our first beginnings in 1866, Best’s Great Western is home to some of Australia’s oldest and most significant vineyards producing world-class wines for over 148 years in Victoria’s Great Western region.
As one of Australia’s oldest and continuously family owned and operated wineries, they have crafted extraordinary and iconic wines of elegance and longevity. Owned by just two families since 1866, the Best family who founded the winery, and today, their vision lives on through our family, the Thomson’s, having purchased the property after Henry Best’s death in 1920.
The Grampians has enjoyed a long history of viticulture dominated by production of red wines of longevity, elegance and power. Silky smooth Shiraz with flavours and aromas of red cherry, plum, spice and pepper is typical of the regional style.
