Lizard Island To Close Temporarily 2 July 2014Lizard Island sustained significant damage as Cyclone Ita passed directly over it earlier this year. Since then, Delaware North has been working diligently in the planning and early rebuilding stages restoring Lizard Island back to its position as one of the premier resort destinations in the world. It has now been determined that Lizard Island will remain closed until early 2015. Updates on the resort's reopening plans will be posted on this website regularly. In consultation with our project management team, it is estimated that to rebuild the resort's amenities and facilities to the exceptionally high standard that beautiful Lizard Island is renowned for, the resort will remain closed until late 2014 and we are advising guests that we will not be able to accommodate stays before 30 September 2014 at this stage. We regret that we are unable to commit to a reopening date at this time as we are still working through the rebuild plans with our project management team. We are aiming to reach a firmer date in the next 6 weeks, at which time we will update you accordingly. Any existing bookings through until 30 September 2014 will be cancelled without penalties and no new bookings will be taken for this time. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience to your holiday plans and our Reservations Team Specialists will be in contact to assist with relocating you to other Delaware North destinations where possible. We thank you sincerely for your support and understanding during this restoration period and look forward to sharing Lizard Island's reopening plans and date with you very soon. 17 April 2014 We have received the first official assessment report on the condition of buildings, infrastructure and safety of immediate environs surrounding the resort, it is evident that Lizard Island will not reopen in the short term. An initial estimate at this time will see the resort closed until 30 June, 2014 however we will keep you updated as we learn more, following further assessments in the coming weeks. We appreciate the inconvenience to your travel plans however our Reservation Team Specialists will be in contact with you to try, if you are booked to travel prior to 30 June 2014, and assist with relocating you to another Delaware North destination where possible. Thank you sincerely for your understanding and support at this time and we look forward to restoring Lizard Island to its beautiful, natural state as soon as possible. 15 April 2014 Following initial assessments of the impact of Cyclone Ita on Lizard Island we can confirm that the island will be closed, at this stage, up until 28 April inclusive. This will allow our site team to commence the clean up required, and assess and test all infrastructure and equipment. We will continue to update you on a daily basis and again, thank you sincerely for your understanding. 13 April 2014 Initial observations are that while the Resort has sustained some structural damage, many of the buildings look to be intact. However there is extensive vegetation damage which is currently limiting accessibility. 12 April 2014 Members of our team are planning to return to Lizard Island tomorrow to assess the condition of the resort and its surroundings. We hope to be in a position to update you further by Monday, 14 April. Thank you for your understanding. 10 April 2014 Cyclone Ita is tracking towards Lizard Island and it is predicted that it will pass through Lizard Island as a category 4 cyclone on the evening of Friday, 11 April. An immediate assessment of any damage as well as repair and clean up will be done once it is safe to return to the Island. As a result Lizard Island will remain closed until 21 April inclusive and no reservations will be taken for travel during this time. Thank you for your understanding. 9 April 2014 Lizard Island is closed due to forecasted Cyclone Ita. All guests have been transferred and staff evacuation is taking place today and will be completed by tomorrow morning. No staff will remain on Lizard Island. Operational procedures are being put in place to pack down the Island which include securing all outdoor areas and moving our boats to the mainland. 8 April 2014 The Weather Bureau is forecasting that Cyclone Ita is developing into a category 4 cyclone and expected to hit the northern most coast of Queensland as early as Friday morning. To ensure the safety of all guests and staff, Lizard Island will be evacuated over the next 24 hours with the island to remain closed until 13 April.
